Mungret St. Pauls 1-11 Askeaton 0-18

Saturday, 12 September in Clarina on a sunny but very breezy day our Junior A Hurlers played Askeaton in the last of their group stages.

Playing into the strong wind in the first half Mungret St. Pauls were struggling to get going, Askeaton had built up a 5 point lead with Mungret St. Pauls only pointing 2 balls before the first water break. The second quarter again saw Askeaton dominate on the score board as Mungret St. Pauls struggled to score another 3 points and Askeaton tacking on another 5 points to go in at the break on a score 0-12 to 0-5.

With the breeze in the second half it was a better half for Mungret St. Pauls who had to close a 7 point gap, this was quickly diminished when from the throw in the ball was run down past Askeaton players and shot straight into the back of the net. A penalty for Mungret St. Pauls came in the next minute but ended up over the cross bar, another point from play for Mungret St. Pauls saw the gap back to 2 points. There was an exchange of points before the water break. The next two points came from play with one for each side, the remaining 3 Askeaton points were all from frees, with Mungret St. Pauls only managing one more point. Our defense was very solid through out the game preventing Askeaton getting any ball over the goal line while Mungret St. Pauls broke through the Askeaton back line a few times but it was the goalie that put a stop to any further goals.
