Mungret St. Pauls 0-19 Bruff 1-17

This was a game that with a few more minutes could have been a different outcome. Mungret St. Pauls struggled in the first half, came back strong in the second half to bring the game into extra time but unfortunately was unable to get over the final hurdle in Kilmallock on a dirty wet Saturday 13 October.

The first half, Mungret St. Pauls did not get into the game as Bruff took off on the scoring. Mungret St. Pauls were putting their energy in getting the ball but not able to take their score. Bruff went 4 points to our 2 in the first few minutes until they got a break and struck the ball past the backs into the left corner of the net. Mungret St. Pauls were on the back foot but each point they scored was equaled by Bruff moments after for 4 points. Bruff scored the last 2 points before the first break leaving the score board reading 0-6 to 1-10.

The second half was a better game for Mungret St. Pauls as they redeemed themselves. The first four points were all for Mungret St. Pauls leaving a goal difference. A pointed free for Bruff was equaled by a point from play for Mungret St. Pauls. A chance of a goal was quickly quashed by Bruff's defenders. By the fifteenth minute of this half Mungret St. Pauls pulled themselves back into the game with 3 unanswered points. Bruff then went 3 points up again but a last boost from Mungret St. Pauls and they scored the final 3 points to level the game.

As the rain became heavier the extra time commenced, these ten minutes brought with it many wides and a lot of messy play as the pitch was turning into a mud bath. Mungret St. Pauls and Bruff matched points and in the dying minutes of injury time Mungret St. Pauls for the first time in the game took a lead with a point from play.

The final ten minutes of the game were the hardest to watch as the rain was unrelenting. Bruff opened with a point to even the score, the next score could win the game as Mungret St. Pauls fought hard at the muddy Bruff goal they were held back. Two missed scores each brought the game to a nail biting finish. Bruff broke through and took their chance on a point to go ahead, Mungret St. Pauls had one last try only for it to go wide and the whistle to go to signal the finish of the 2018 campaign for Mungret St. Pauls.

If you were to look at how far this team has come from last year, they were fighting to stay in the Premier Intermediate Championship while this year they topped the group and were only one point away from a place in the final. This is a relatively young team with 6 of the starting players only graduated from Minor last year. This is a team to watch next year as it has a lot to prove.
