This was a very entertaining match between Camborne School of Mines Shinty Club who were visiting from Cornwall, England and a selection of the Mungret St. Pauls Junior team on Thursday 9 August. With one home player signing a transfer to England the game started with ten players a side. The first half saw Mungret St. Pauls play with their hurley and the Cornwall team with their Shinty Caman. The ball was the Shinty size 3 cork sliotar which was very easily sent through the air with the hurleys which made the play very fast. It was not a serious game with comic moves on the pitch but it ran very smoothly with Mungret St. Pauls powering on in the scoring. With the second half came a change of weapons as the Limerick team put their hands on the Caman which is longer (measured to the belly button) and heaver. Some of the Cornwall team took this opportunity to play with hurleys, this evened the game out and saw more play on the pitch than at the goals. Some of the Mungret St. Pauls players looked to be very comfortable in adapting to their new stick while others struggled.
After the match everyone was welcomed into the club house for much needed refreshments and a bit to eat. There was a small presentation from both teams with some lovely words of gratitude for hosting the game from Cornwall before some of our junior players gave the visitors a tour of Limerick later that night.
We would like to Thank the Camborne School of Mines Shinty Club players for coming and introducing this game to us and I am sure we have many players looking to return the offer in Cornwall.
