After a fixtures clash and bad weather conditions, third time lucky we finally managed to run off our annual Stephen Cahill Tournament on a beautiful sunny day last Sunday 5 November. We had Six teams competing with teams from Fr. Caseys of Abbeyfeale, Adare and two teams from both Doora-Barefield and Mungret. Each team played 2 group games and a Finals match. Mungret Reds defeated Adare in the opening game. In the second game, it was a much tighter affair and after a keenly contested match with Doora-Barefield (Maroon), Mungret edged out with a one point win. Mungret Whites recorded a high scoring win against Doora Barefield Whites in the opening game but lost out to Fr. Caseys in their second game. Now to the finals and it was great to see both Mungret Teams contest the “A” and “B” Finals. Mungret Whites faced a strong Doora-Barefield (Maroon) team in the “B” Final and were down a few goals at half time. The boys didn’t drop their heads and pulled back a few scores in the second half to try and narrow the gap but in the end Doora-Barefield went on to win it. In the “A” Final Mungret Reds were up against Fr. Caseys and we were expecting a close and tightly contested match. Our Boys proved too strong and went on to win the final comfortably. In the “C” Final, Adare went on to defeat Doora-Barefield Whites. Afterwards, Kevin O’ Hagan made a fitting speech acknowledging the late Stephen Cahill and the contribution he had made to the Mungret Club. Medals were presented to all players taking part and a Cup to the winning captains along with Man of Match awards. Mark Barrett captained the Mungret Reds and he received the Stephen Cahill Cup on behalf of the team. Alan Cleary won Man of the Match. Thanks to Helen McKeogh for managing the Kitchen and to all the parents that helped out aswell and for providing refreshments. Our club referees on the day were Kevin O’ Hagan, Seamus Hayes and Mike Roche. Never an easy task and we thank you for doing it. Thanks to everybody else that helped out to make the day. A big thank you to our Coaches for managing both teams, Cian O’ Donaill & Derek Meagher for managing the Mungret Whites and Sean Ahern & Tony Barry for the Mungret Reds.
