Mungret St. Pauls 3-10 Doon 1-13
Looking at our records the first time for Mungret St. Pauls to win the U-14 Hurling trophy was by our current Minors in 2013, a new trophy was named in 2015 in memory of Knockaderry player, Jack Lyons and Mungret St. Pauls were the first team to win it, it alluded us last year but after loosing out in the Féile final the U-14 players had build up the need to retrieve the trophy again.
The match was played in Claughaun in not ideal weather on Saturday 28 October.. Both teams seemed ideally suited leveling the sides many times throughout the game. Doon took an early hold on the game taking in a 3 point lead only for Mungret St. Pauls to strike back with a goal just before the half time to level the playing field.
Doon came out strong at the start of the second half and built up their lead again this time to 4 points by the 15 minute mark on this half. Mungret St. Pauls U-14 team are not the type to get hung up on the score they play the game and keep the ball flowing and yet again it was another goal that knock Doon off the lead on the full time whistle. With extra time declared it would come down to the players with the most steam left. It was Mungret St. Pauls that pulled out all the stops in extra time only letting Doon get one score at the end in, Mungret St. Pauls did most of their damage in the second part of extra time. Mungret St. Pauls added to their 2 points from the first half of extra time, with a third point and their third goal of the game to take them out in front with 6 points. Doon replied back with their only score in extra time with a goal which is where the scoring stopped and with the final whistle Mungret St. Pauls accepted the Jack Lyons Trophy again from the Lyons family.
Well done to both teams on a fantastic game. Thank you to our coaches, parents and especially our players for putting in a lot of hard work through the year, some get to rest until the next season of hurling while our dual players are still preparing for the Football final.
Special mention of Thanks to the team sponsor John Fitzgerald from Spar, Racefield who not only supplied the socks for the players also sponsored their winning feast.
