Mungret St. Pauls 2-13 Effin 1-8
With Mungret St. Pauls having won the dress rehearsal of this match 2 weeks ago it was today's result that counted. The Limerick Motor Centre sponsored, Mungret St. Pauls stepped up to the plate and with Effin getting frees easily Mungret St. Pauls worked their score mostly from play and kept their position in the Premier Intermediate Championship for next year.
Mungret St. Pauls were challenged in the goals in the starting minutes of the game but Effin were denied and Mungret St. Pauls got a head start in the game striking 2 points before Effin were given their first chance to score from a free on the 10th minute. It would take another 10 minutes in the game before Effin took their second score from another free, while Mungret St. Pauls point 3 from frees and 2 more from play. This was followed on with the sliotar being sent in from the edge of the pitch and with a bit of help passed the Effin goalie. Effin started to come back into the game sending 2 more sliotars over the bar another point a piece and a great goal save by Mungret St. Pauls ended the first half with Mungret St. Pauls a comfortable 6 points ahead.
The second half had Effin helped out with scoring frees and Mungret St. Pauls using team work for their first point but it was a slow scoring quarter before the game heated up and pressure put on both backs. Effin using a 20 yard free infront of the goal needing the 3 points took their chance but the quick touch of Mungret St. Pauls goalie saw the sliotar travel the other end of the pitch where the Effin goalie was caught off guard as the sliotar passed him as he stumbled and straight into the net. Effins replies were too little too late as a scored penalty was their last attempt as Mungret St. Pauls sent one more sliotar over from a free to complete the game and hold their Premier Intermediate title for 2018.
Having only moved up the ranks from last year and ending in the bottom of the pile this year Mungret St. Pauls knows what lays ahead of them next year and we are sure plans are already in place for improvement. Well done to the players, mentors and families for all the time you have dedicated to Mungret St. Pauls the future Premier Intermediate players appreciate all your hard work.
