Over the past week the U12 players have add a very busy time. First up the U12 players represented the club in the U13C hurling championship on Tuesday where they played a very strong Dromcollogher-Broadford team away from home and during a stormy weather. All the players performed outstanding, however went down 7-6 to 3-4 in a highly competitive game. The following night 8 of the players turned out for the U13A team v Newcastle West away from home. First half was very tight with only a point between the teams. Newcastle West came out stronger in second half and won in the end. On Friday night the U12’s were playing the end of season finals out in the UL North Campus – across the pitch. Up first was game v Ballybrown in semi-final where Mungret played very poorly in first half but played outstanding in the second half but losing the game to one single point. In the third/fourth place play-off the team were up against Bruree. In this game the players were focused and continued their second half performance from first game and ran out comfortable winners. Doon went onto to win the U12 championship by a point against Ballybrown. This will be a great benchmark for the players over the next couple of years as there was very little between these top four teams in the county.
The 11 aside team was up next at 8pm, under half flood lights and up against the A teams from Murroe Boher and Blackrock. Murroe Boher were too strong but great performance from Conor Crowley in goals and Sean Duff in midfield kept the score down a bit. In the second game against Blackrock, this was a very competitive game under full flood lights and colder conditions. The players played really well here and only went down by a handful of points
On Sunday morning the U12 players were on the road again as they competed in the Christy Morrissey tournament in Newtown Shandrum, Cork. We were in group one where we played Newtown Shandrum first but went down by 6 points due to some silly frees and a slow first half. Up next was Kilmacud Crokes, Dublin where the team started stronger and kept the high tempo for the whole game and won by 2 points. This meant that we were up against Ballyea, Clare in the Division 2 final. Here the players increased the intensity of their game from earlier and scored four great goals in the first half. The second half was a lot tighter but a further two goals meant that Mungret ran out comfortable winners of the Division Two final. Thanks to all players won participated over the past week and in particular over the year. We have our own Liam O’Donoghue tournament on Sat Oct 7th. Training will continue on Tuesday evenings at 6pm and best of luck to all the U12 players who are competing in the U13C, U13A and U14A hurling teams.
