They say that a week is a long time in politics, and some of our camogie players have been finding recently that the same applies in sport. Our U-13 summer league concluded away to Granagh Ballingarry on Thursday 17 August and the less said about the result the better. Hopes were not high the following Tuesday 22 August for the U-14s in their first championship outing against Granagh Ballingarry, and though we lost, this was a highly competitive performance where a few late goals put a gloss on the scoreboard for the visitors. This was followed by our debut in the U-13 championship at home against Ahane on Saturday 26 August, which again was one to forget. Heading into Round 2 of the U-14 championship on Tuesday 29 August against Ballybrown, a quality team that have inflicted much suffering on us at this age group over the years, many of the girls could have been forgiven if they decided to stay in and watch telly that night, however these ladies are resilient to the core, and landed a few early blows on the Ballybrown goal to take a surprise early lead, which we maintained until half time.
We expected a backlash and it came, but that only drove us on harder, and as the second half progressed the penny started to drop slowly that there would be no comeback, and Mungret St. Pauls recorded a sensational 3-5 to 0-5 win. This was followed up with a great win for our U-12s at home against Kileedy on Thursday 31 August, and the U-13’s carried this remarkable momentum into round 1 of the U-13 league final blitz on Saturday 2 September, which we started with a good win against St Ailbe’s. Trouble was expected in the next round against Cappamore, who beat us by 5 goals in the league, but Mungret St. Pauls again put in an amazing performance, with our opponents very happy to get home in the end on a scoreline of 2-3 to 1-1. The girls gave in to tiredness for the last match against Na Piarsaigh, but given that over half the team will be U-13 again next year, this was a really solid performance from everyone. Adding this to the U-16’s emphatic win in the championship against Tournafulla last Friday 1 September, it has been a great few weeks for the club with hopefully much more to come.
Well done to all the girls and all their hard work they put in over the weeks with training and matches.
