On Saturday last the Mungret reds and whites were in Mick Neville Park Rathkeale to participate in the U12 football finals day. Initially it was involving the top four teams in division 1 of u12 league but due to some logistical issues 2 more teams were added to mix so it turned out that all clubs would play 2 games and this would determine who came out on top. Mungret reds first game was against Oola who were physical and competitive but our boys withstood the challenge and emerged victorious with some to spare. The Whites first game was against the unbeaten all year Adare. This game was a close affair with scores at a premium. Mungret led 5 points to one at half time but it was their resolute defending and all round commitment that saw them run out 6 points to 2 winners. In the next game the Whites played Monaleen and had an altogether easier game overcoming a spirited Monaleen. So the Whites finished with maximum wins. The reds had their last game against Bruff. This game did not start to script with Bruff winning in most positions and at halftime the reds were down 2-3 to no score. After a spirited halftime talk delivered by Paul Walsh the reds returned with renewed vigour and started to claw back the score and then amazingly take the lead. With three minutes to go the score read Bruff 2- 3 mungret 3-2. There was a frantic last 3 minutes with Bruff throwing the kitchen sink at Mungret but the boys held out for a fantastic comeback wim and finishing joint top with the other Mungret team. This was a great achievement from our lads to have 2 evenly balanced u12 teams being competitive in all matches and finishing the top two teams in u12 Division one finals day. The players and parents deserve great credit for their commitment during the year and this can only bode well for the future!!
