Over the past couple of weeks the U12 Hurling teams have played three games in the second stage of the Limerick U12 hurling league. First game up was against Bruree away from home. This was a great game of hurling where the team utilized all their skills learnt during the year and had to deploy a different strategy in the second half where the Bruree full back was clearing everything up. The game ended up 2-12 to Mungret and 0-4 to Bruree. Players to excel on the night were Sean Duff with two great goals on the ground, John Wright and Fintan Fitzgerald who cleared up midfield and setup many of the points, Mark O’Brien whose free taking and pen play points were crucial and Sean O’Halloran who had a powerful first half. Next game up was again Drom-Althlacca. This was an 11 a side game and due to the holidays Mungret just had 11 players. This was a very physical but fair game of hurling from both sides. We played the second half with 10 players as Conor Galligan stopped a near goal at the end of the first half with his body. The team lost in a great battle by one point 3-3 to 3-2. On the night all players were outstanding but the two players who really stood up were John Wright and Diarmaid Hynes and they were supported by Marcus Lyons, Luke Walsh and Tom Lloyd. The third game was again Bruff and again we mixed the team around due to the holiday time. This game was again a physical game with some exceptional skill from all the players on the night. This was a low scoring game with Mungret coming out on a scoreline of 6pts to 3pts.
Congratulations to Mark O’Brien who represent the club, parish and county at the National Community Games Puck Fada competition on Sunday. After the first round, Mark qualified for the final three rounds. Mark finished fifth overall in a very high standard with a distance of 79m. The winning distance was 85m. Well done to Mark, you did your club very proud.
