Mungret St. Pauls 2-8 Ballybrown 0-21
On Monday 17 July in Ballybrown the U-16 hurlers headed into a game that would require them to put everything into the match. It took Mungret St. Pauls 15 minutes to get into the game and it was this 15 minutes that Mungret St. Pauls could not afford to waste. While we were settling into the match Ballybrown took control, although they left 4 chances of points behind them Ballybrown had 2 points up before Mungret St. Pauls got to put their first sliotar over the bar from a free. An attack on our backs at the mouth of the goal was successfully blocked away. This game was mainly scored from frees with Ballybrown taking 7 of their 9 points in the first half from frees and Mungret St. Pauls getting their 3 points from frees also. The first half also brought Mungret St. Pauls 2 goals the first was an unstoppable shot into the net with the second coming from the loose hand of the Ballybrown goalie. Half time ended with both sides on level pegging.
Ballybrown came out strong again in the second half and put themselves ahead with a point, Mungret St. Pauls leveled it again a few minutes later until Ballybrown took the lead and with both sides letting very few shots go wide it was again the easily given frees that won the game for Ballybrown converting 7 of their 12 second half points from frees while Mungret St. Pauls knotched up 5 points, only 1 from a given free.
They say goals win games but this game was easily won in the end by the frees. Mungret St. Pauls still have Patrickswell and Na Piarsaigh to meet in this Championship.
